A single trained marksman is suspected of killing seven British soldiers in separate attacks in Iraq, an inquest heard on Thursday.
The sniper's victims are thought to include Cpl Rodney Wilson
(nella foto), who was killed when he was shot in the back while trying to rescue an injured colleague in Basra. Analysis of the bullet which struck him showed it was fired from the same American-made weapon which has been involved in the deaths of six other servicemen in the city. Cpl Wilson's father, Richard, said: 'It's almost certainly the same person firing it, some sort of hired shooter probably.' His son, 30, of 4th Battalion The Rifles, became the 150th British serviceman to die in Iraq when he was gunned down in June. He ran out under heavy fire to rescue another wounded corporal. As he was helping to carry him to safety, he was hit by a 5.56 calibre bullet. The ammunition is compatible with weapons such as the M16 and M4 Carbine, commonly used by US forces, and the SA80, the standard British Army issue assault rifle. It was 'highly likely' to have been fired from the same weapon which was used to kill the other servicemen in the previous month, an expert told the inquest. [...]
